Transgenic Animal Model

Microscopic examination is an essential tool in the definition of phenotypes of transgenic and knockout mice. The phenotype may be present but undetectable by other means. In the example below, a morphologic change was clearly detectable by histologic examination but undetectable by macroscopic examination. The morphometric analysis of the primary target organ, the thyroid, confirmed significantly increased organ areas and changes consistent with the absence of the thyroid beta receptor.

1. Thyroid gland from a homozygous knockout (-/-) mouse lacking the thyroid beta receptor . Note the increase in thyroid tissuecompared to the control mouse below. The cross-sectional area can be measured using computer-assisted image analysis techniques to yield an accurate estimates of the increase in the total size of the organ.
2. Wild type, control mouse.
